MTV.com : Hear Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown Right Now On 'The Leak'.
We've been writing about it for nearly three years now — since May 19, 2006, to be exact — covering every stop, start, rumor and sideproject that led to its creation. And now, you can finally hear what all the fuss is about.
Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown is here. Even though it doesn't hit stores for another week, MTV is premiering the album right now, in its entirety, on "The Leak."
Back in 2006, Billie Joe, Mike and Tre promised that the album would be "an event," then they got to work writing the thing (of course, they took a break to record a version of "The Simpsons" theme), and start a garage-rock side-project too.
In early '08, they confirmed to MTV News that they were taking time off from recording the album to masquerade as the Foxboro Hot Tubs, then began fielding rumors that they were working on Breakdown with legendary producer Butch Vig, (rumors they would confirm with a YouTube clip and a middle finger).
Then, in February of this year, we finally got to hear some of what they'd been working on. The band previewed six songs from Breakdown for MTV News, which we lauded for their "hooks, ambition and sheer bombast." In April, they premiered the flame-heavy video for the first single, "Know Your Enemy" on multiple MTV properties worldwide, then sat down with us for an in-depth interview about the album.
And earlier this week, we published our preview of Breakdown, praising Armstrong's lyrical breadth and the band's musical scope, calling the album "subtle and smart ... with the brains and wherewithal to realize that there isn't just one enemy, there are hundreds of them, and they're hiding everywhere."
But that's just our take ... now, after all the waiting, it's your turn. Head on over to "The Leak"and judge for yourself!.
